Where Apprentice Engineers takeoff

Yana, Apprentice (Mechanical)

snippet heading

What trade did you takeoff in and when?

I was lucky to the join the Jetstar Apprentice Program in 2022 in the B1 Mechanical Stream.

What are you highlights of the Program?

The highlight was working within the base maintenance hangar. It was the best two years of my apprenticeship - learning new things every day and improving my hand skills. I’ve learned a lot from the hangar, including how aircraft systems work and removing and installing different types of components. The best part was doing high-power engine runs in which we test and power up the engine like it was going to take off. Such a fun and exciting job to do!

How has your development been supported on the Program?

The support I received as an apprentice is overwhelming. As a female in a male-dominated industry, I felt intimidated at first – but that feeling was quickly replaced by determination to learn and excel because of the amazing support I received. I didn’t feel any pressure because of my gender, but rather, I felt empowered by the opportunity to showcase my abilities and contribute to a field where diversity is celebrated and valued. This diversity made for a strong workplace culture. I was working with highly skilled AME’s and LAME’s who provided great support and guidance. From every small detail of the job, they never hesitate to help and pass on knowledge.  Our Apprentice facilitator also provided great support and was available to chat through any concerns. Our regular assessment and feedback evaluation was very helpful in understanding the areas where we needed to improve.

Any specific work experiences you most enjoyed?

One of my favourite experiences was completing the gear change. Landing gear change is a critical maintenance procedure that requires a lot of attention to detail. Removing and installing new landing gear in a short period of time was very challenging but fulfilling at the same time. From removing the big tires of an aircraft, to performing the testing of the newly installed landing gears, it’s a very satisfying process. At the end of the day, it’s a team effort and working with amazing Jetstar AME’s and LAME’s, the work becomes enjoyable and rewarding.
